Workplace Hearing Services
Each employer has a duty of care to ensure that the Workplace Health and Safety of workers and any other person is not affected by the conduct of the employer’s business. In Queensland, under the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008, an employer must prevent risk to the employer’s workers from exposure to excessive noise at work.
As a rule of thumb, if you have to shout to communicate to a person standing one metre away, the noise level is excessive.
Noise induced hearing loss
Hearing loss is the most damaging effect of excessive noise. The extent of the hearing damage, is relative to the volume or loudness of the noise, its pitch and the duration of exposure.
Continued exposure to excessive noise, progressively causes permanent hearing loss. Noise induced hearing loss is irreversible - there is no cure, surgery or long term effective treatment.
It is an insidious problem and the person affected is usually not aware of their ongoing loss of hearing until the damage is well progressed. They may initially notice difficulty hearing in social situations, where background noise is present, such as conversations in crowds or at parties. As the hearing loss progresses, it may lead to a sense of isolation and the high frequency sounds of nature such as birds, insects and water falling, may not be heard at all. Family members may notice and be irritated by a need for frequent repetitions and higher volume when listening to the television or radio.
