We are committed to delivering high quality diagnostic and rehabilitation services to all our clients and this includes medical practitioners. One of our aims is to provide a concise resevoir of up-to-date information and services that GP’s can call on to add value to their patients. To this end, we have developed the following process to make the interaction between us as seemless as possible.
The Referral Process
- Call any one of our Neurosensory Unit clinics to book an appointment or you can request an appointment online. Alternatively you can direct your patients to contact any of our clinics themselves to arrange an appointment.
- Give the patient a referral form which specifies the test/s which need to be performed. A referral is required to enable a patient to claim a rebate from Medicare.
- To order more referral pads please phone The Neurosensory Unit on 07 3220 3522
Services for our Referring General Practitioners

- Audiological Assessments with recommendations will be sent through by fax, post or both if required
Information evenings are often held by our fully qualified audiologists to assist with Audiological Management. Topics covered include:
- Interpretation of audiology reports,
- Tympanometry and middle ear problems,
- Otoacoustic Emmissions - what are they and what do they mean?
- Determining appropriate Central Auditory Processing Referrals
- Updates on latest hearing aid technology and services offered within the field
- Implantable Hearing Devices (including Cochlear Implants and Bone Anchored Hearing Aids BAHA)
Please contact us if you are interested in attending an upcoming educational evening or would like a complimentary information kit which further outlines our products and services.

Tests and Services offered by NSU
Hearing Tests
Pure Tone Audiogram and Impedence Testing.
A Pure Tone Audiogram is a definitive threshold test on both ears. Impedance testing examines middle ear problems.
Time taken - 45 minutes
Baby Hearing Test
Test selection depends on the age and developmental level of the child. It may include Visual Orientation, Response Audiometry, Otoacoustic Emissions, Impedance Testing or Auditory Brainstem Responses.
Time taken - 1 hour
Baby Hearing Screen
Automated Auditory Brainstem Responses and Transient Otoacoustic Emission Screening is used.
Time taken - 30 minutes
Hearing Aid Assessments, Fitting & Rehabilitation
Advice on hearing needs for private patients. We can also select and fit patients with the most suitable hearing aids. A rehabilitation program is also included to promote successful use of the hearing aid.
Special Conditions: The Unit is an approved Government Supplier of hearing aids for pensioners.
Time taken - 1 hour for initial session
Central Auditory Processing Testing
This test battery assesses a possible dysfunction of higher auditory centres when a child’s hearing is normal but they do not achieve at school.
Special Conditions: Parents of patients must be aware that this test cannot be bulk billed. School reports from guidance officers should be included with the referral.
Time Taken - 2 hours
Otoacoustic Emissions
This is an objective test of cochlear hair cell function, which is highly correlated with hearing. A useful adjunct to central auditory processing and tinnitus assessments.
Special Conditions: Conductive pathology must be excluded before this test can be used. Impedance is a pre-requisite test over 8 months of age.
Time taken - 30 mins
Tinnitus Consultation
Assessments for patients who report tinnitus which is unilateral, of sudden onset or causing distress.
Time Taken - 1 hour
Cochlear Implant Assessment “Bionic Ear”

Special Conditions: Patients must have severe to profound bilateral deafness and obtain limited benefit from hearing aids.
Time Taken - 4 hours
Swim Plugs/Ear Plugs/Musicians Plugs/ Ear Moulds
A range of swim plugs, ear wraps, customised noise protection plugs, musicians plugs and ear moulds for hearing aids can be supplied. Impressions will be taken.
Time Taken - 15 minutes
Electrophysiological Tests
Auditory Brainstem Evoked Response (ABR)
This test investigates the integrity of the auditory pathway where retro cochlear or brainstem lesions are suspected. This test is appropriate for patients who have asymmetrical hearing loss or suspicious unilateral symptoms. It may also be used to investigate hearing thresholds in babies and adults.
Time taken - 1 hour
Electrocochleography (ECOG) - Extratympanic
This test is performed on patients who have a cochlear lesion where cochlear hydrops or fistula are suspected.
Time taken - 1 hour
Cortical Evoked Responses
This test is used to assess the auditory system at the higher, cortical level. It may also be used as an objective test of hearing thresholds.
Time taken - 30 minutes
Late Cortical Responses
This test assesses the event-related P300 potential, which may be influenced by attention deficit.
Time taken - 30 minutes
Facial Nerve Assessment (ENOG)
This test is performed to assess the facial nerve function in the presence of any facial nerve weakness.
Time taken - 1 hour
Balance Tests
Electonystagmography (ENG) and Calorics
This test assesses the vestibular system following the onset of dizziness or disequilibrium.
